Ric Ocasek, the former lead singer of the iconic new wave band The Cars, has been found dead in his Manhattan home, police said. He was 75.
“That is true,” the New York Police Department confirmed to Heavy. Police say that Ocasek was found “in his bed unconscious and unresponsive” and that the call came in around 4 p.m. on September 15, 2019 for a male in need of aid inside a residence at East 19th Street.
No cause of death has been revealed at press time, however initial reports indicated it was a “natural.”
Ocasek’s hiccuppy vocals, deadpan delivery, edgy pop smarts, beatnik-poetry-inspired lyrics, and cool-cat persona helped make The Cars one of the most important bands not just of the 1970s and ’80s, but of all time — a rare act that enjoyed both massive commercial success and critical adoration, both hipster college radio play and high rotation on MTV.
These amazing Polaroids of Ric Ocasek were taken by Andy Warhol in April, 1980. Not only did Andy Warhol create portraits of Ric, he also directed The Cars’ music video, “Hello Again”, and featured Ric on his “Fifteen Minutes” TV show.
