These 25 Celebrity Prom Photos That Are Just As Awkward As Yours!

For most people, the classic high school dance is one of the most memorable moments of teenage life. There are the uncomfortable first kisses and slow dances, incredibly awesome fashion choices, and, of course, awkwardly-posed date photos. Your favorite celebrities are not immune to this wonderful rite of passage.

A collection of the best celebrity prom photos, from Rihanna to George Clooney. For that special time of year when corsages and crowns rule the school, the gallery below features pictures of famous people taken during their prom or school dance.

1. John Stamos

California boy John Stamos told Orange Coast magazine he was “the dorky kid” in high school, but he still made for one dreamy prom date with his feathered hair and white ruffled tux.

2. Matthew McConaughey

Even in 1987 — when the totally awesome hair and clothing styles were often questionable — Matthew McConaughey was a hunk! That’s what people called handsome guys back then, right? The future Dallas Buyers Club star, who was then 18, looked dapper in a tux and a bow tie that matched the royal blue of his date’s dress. That lucky lady is Lori Klinger, McConaughey’s sweetheart in high school in Longview, Texas.

3. Amy Poehler

Amy Poehler looked like she was wearing a bad bridesmaid dress for her 1989 prom! The comedian recalled her days back at Burlington High in Burlington, Mass., where she was active in cheerleading and student council, in her 2014 memoir Yes Please. “In my high school yearbook, I was voted third runner-up for ‘Most Casual,’” she wrote. “I never figured out if that meant most casual in dress or in overall manner. In any case, I didn’t come in first. I guess the two ahead of me wanted it less.”

4. Brad Pitt

Long before Jennifer Aniston and Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt’s heart belonged to Tonya Westphalen. The Moneyball star — who graduated from Kickapoo High School in Springfield, Mo., in 1982 — suited up to take his pretty girlfriend with some serious tan lines to prom. We can see why Pitt was voted best-dressed male in his class.

5. Kim Kardashian and T.J. Jackson

Before anyone was keeping up with Kim Kardashian, she was a teenager attending the 1998 prom at the Marymount School in L.A. While she wasn’t famous yet, her date and reported boyfriend at the time, T.J. Jackson, was something of a celebrity: Yep, he was a part of that Jackson family, the son of Michael’s brother Tito and, along with his brothers, a member of the music group 3T.

6. Jimmy Fallon

The Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon tweeted this gem of a pic, and naturally had a witty caption to go along with it: “My date went tanning the night before. I did not. I looked like Powder. #awkwardpromstory.”

7. John Legend

Before the world fell in love with John Legend and his romantic ballads, Springfield North High School in Springfield, Ohio, enjoyed his sweet smile and cool manner. “I was my high school’s student body president and prom king,” the 1997 grad told Us Weekly in February 2014. “[Wife] Chrissy [Teigen] laughs when I bring this up!”

8. Gwen Stefani

Gwen Stefani seems too cool to take part in a cheesy tradition like a prom. However, the truth is quite different. “This is the dress me & my mom made when I was 17, inspired by Grace Kelly’s dress in the movie Rear Window,” she captioned this 1987 photo on Instagram.

9. Claire Danes

My So-Called Life alum Claire Danes was not as tortured about high school as her character, Angela Chase. Although the teen star received a lot of her education through on-set tutoring, she spent some time at L.A.’s Le Lycée Français, and attended its prom in 1997. What she learned from tutors obviously stuck, since she later attended Yale University.

10. Ellen DeGeneres

Ellen DeGeneres was one groovy chick in her plaid prom dress and feathered hair. The talk show host shared this amazing throwback photo of her and her cute prom date, who also looked pretty stylish (for the ’70s) in his burgundy jacket and matching bow tie. “Happy #PromTBT. Yes, this is real,” the funny lady cracked on Instagram.

11. George Clooney

No surprise that ladies’ man and future Hollywood A-lister George Clooney attended his 1978 prom at Augusta High School in Augusta, Ky., with a college freshman, even though he was a high school junior. His platonic date, Laura Laycock, revealed to People in 1996 that the two cruised around in a Corvette that belonged to his father, and that the Ocean’s Eleven star spent the whole night teasing people and doing imitations. Sounds like George!

12. Britney Spears

A year and a half before she became a permanent fixture on pop radio, Britney Spears was just a teen attending her prom at Parklane Academy, a private school near her hometown of Kentwood, La., in 1997. The “Scream & Shout” singer’s sequined dress covered a lot more than her outfits would just a few years later!

13. Halle Berry

Halle Berry was the belle of the ball when she was named prom queen at Bedford High School near Cleveland, Ohio … until allegations arose that Berry and her friends had stuffed the ballot box and tampered with the results of this very important election. Years later, Berry told People that the false claims deeply affected her. “It took me a long time to get over it,” she later said of the 1984 incident.

14. Jon Hamm

Former Mad Men star Jon Hamm and his prom date, Sarah Clarke, an actress who has appeared on 24 and in the Twilight movies, were part of a some serious teen drama back in the day in their hometown of St. Louis. In the May 2014 issue of Vanity Fair, actor Paul Rudd recalled that months after the prom, he competed for Clarke’s affections against the suave (but obviously not as well-coiffed as he is today) Hamm. Both Hamm and Rudd — friends with Clarke’s brother — found themselves at her house on the same night. “[Hamm] seemed like he was a good-looking, athletic guy who possessed qualities I did not possess,” Rudd said. “We were playing Trivial Pursuit in teams. Sarah and I were on one team and Jon and [Clarke’s brother] were on the other team. Jon would want to go right to Yellow, which was History, and I was like, ‘Oh, great, this guy is smart too.’ They would ask a question like ‘What is the largest lake in Africa?’ and Jon immediately went, ‘Lake Victoria.’ I felt so emasculated in the game that, as a result, I started reading atlases.” Hamm and Rudd became friends after Hamm moved to Hollywood.

15. Brooke Shields

Teenage Brooke Shields took a night off from her work as an actress and model for the 1982 prom at Englewood, N.J.’s Dwight Englewood High School, but the night was still very Hollywood. “My date was Ted McGinley, if you can believe it, from Love Boat,” she told the New York Post in 2010. “We were dating at the time, and he said he would fly in from California to be my date.” Not to mention that Shields’s dress was one from her latest film, Sahara, designed by none other than Valentino.

16. Meg Ryan

Before she became rom-com royalty, Meg Ryan was just a regular teen sporting the feathered hair trend of the day at Bethel High School’s 1979 senior prom in Bethel, Conn. — where she was named prom queen. It looks like she was already practicing her dreamy-eyed, lovestruck expression for Sleepless in Seattle in this shot!

17. Bethenny Frankel

Gotta love ’80s fashion trends! Bethenny Frankel sure did. “In honor of prom season, here’s my #promtbt — who else rocked the ’80s puff-sleeved prom dress look?!” the Real Housewives of New York City star asked on Instagram when she posted this totally awesome snap.

18. Fergie

Judging by those smiles, Fergie was “Fergalicious” even as a teenager at Glen A. Wilson High School in Hacienda Heights, Calif., in 1993. The singer, then known simply as Stacy Ferguson, rocked a figure-fitting floor-length gown with sweet studs on the neckline as she was honored as a member of the prom court, and escorted by Vincent Malice (not pictured), a guy who was convicted of armed bank robbery back in 2008. Thank goodness she didn’t marry him!

19. Josh Duhamel

Speaking of Fergie’s husband, Josh Duhamel shared this totally ’90s snap taken of him before he headed off to pick up his prom date. He captioned it: “The look a high school kid has before prom when he realizes he may see a real live girl naked for the 1st time.” Yeah, right!

20. Danielle Fishel and Lance Bass

Lance Bass was the dream date of many girls jamming to ‘N Sync’s “Tearin’ Up My Heart” in 1999, but it was his girlfriend at the time, Boy Meets World actress Danielle Fishel, who actually snagged him as her prom date. The romantic night almost didn’t happen, though, because Bass had boy band obligations — which, thankfully, were canceled. He ended up sending Fishel “three dozen roses in the mail,” she told Us Weekly, “With a card that said, ‘Plans have changed, I’ll be in town. Can I take you to prom? Check yes or no.’”

21. Elizabeth Banks

Elizabeth Banks donned chic ’90s attire for her prom night at Pittsfield High School in Pittsfield, Mass., in 1992. Back then, the Pitch Perfect 2 actress’s credits were limited to school plays and a lip-syncing competition that she and a group of girls won with a performance of Paula Abdul’s “Cold-Hearted Snake.”

22. Sheryl Crow

Singer Sheryl Crow made her own dress for her 1980 senior prom at Kennett High School in her hometown of Kennett, Mo. Her date, Brian Mitchell, reminisced about the evening in an interview with the local newspaper in 2001. “She was extremely proud of [having made the dress], and nobody knew it,” Mitchell said. “It was the prettiest dress on the prettiest girl there.” To top it all off, Crow was named prom princess.

23. Joel Madden

Joel Madden, front left, wasn’t always a tattooed rocker. This 1997 photo from his prom at La Plata High School in La Plata, Md., shows him wearing a suit while being honored as a member of his school’s prom court. Still, don’t be fooled, because he and twin brother, Benji, had already formed their famous band, Good Charlotte.

24. Paula Deen

Is that Paula Deen? We thought it was Elizabeth Taylor! The celebrity chef was the epitome of a Southern belle at the Albany High School prom in Albany, Ga., in 1965. Do you think she made pre-date appetizers?

25. Matthew Fox

Actor Matthew Fox’s breakthrough role on Party of Five was still 10 years out, and Lost was 20 years ahead when this photo was snapped in 1984. The future TV star was just an (adorable) senior chosen as a prom attendant at the Wind River High School in Crowheart, Wyo.
