15 Color Photographs of New York in the 1970s

New York in the 1970s was a place of great change. The urban diaspora took hold as more and more baby boomers had children and moved to the suburbs. The decade began with the newly crowned New York Mets as World Baseball Champions, and ended with the death of disco. Check out these rare color photographs of New York taken by photographer Richard Friedman in the 1970s.

  1. I remember riding on the ferry in 1971 at 15 in 1971 and seeing them being constructed.Tower-1 was just about done and Tower-2 about three-quarters topped-out.They opened in 1973...to much glory and fanfare as the two tallest buildings in the world ! New York had to always do things in a BIG way...we had two towers, not one !Known as the "Asbestos Monsters" for decades !In retrospect, they never were fully occupied or fulfilled their promise as a dynamic World Trade Center.Their maximum capacity was only about 6o% occupied and operated at a huge loss for the port authority. One would have been enough !
