Leningrad Gas-Mask Drill, 1937

It dates from 1937, four years before the Siege of Leningrad, and that makes the weirdness vivid and poignant. So many of the children here would have died in the Siege, or lived through it in the civil defense force, eating wallpaper paste and digging trenches.

  2. The exterior and interior of Sister Aimee Semple McPherson's 'Angelus Temple' in Los Angeles' Echo Park neighborhood was a whole lot of things, and even though Sister Aimee was a self-invented performer herself in the long run (faked her own kidnapping, miraculously was returned, then indicted for falsifying information, and then she did herself in at fairly early age), the Temple was never a nightclub and nowhere near in location that the of the long-gone establishments shown above. It was a house of worship, radio station broadcast center, and the headquarters of Sister Aimee's Four Square Church.
