These Amazing Vintage Photographs Reveal What New York City Subways Were Like in the 1970s

Hired by the Environmental Protection Agency, Erik Calonius photographed the New York Subway system for the DOCUMERICA Project of the 1970s. The project ran from 1971 to 1973, aiming to capture evidence of possible environmental problems in everyday life. Calonius' snaps, dating from 1973 also serve to document some serious early NYC graffiti.
