47 Fascinating Color Photographs That Capture Street Scenes of the USSR From the 1960s and 1970s

Life in the USSR at this time was not that much different from life in any other developed country in the world. The difference was in how people went about their daily activities and in what conditions they lived.

Communal apartments with shared kitchen and toilet were not conducive to a comfortable standard of living. Crowded public transportation (private cars were very rare) did not help either. Work depended whether you worked in a factory or in an office, but people did not seem to work too hard or cared too much about the outcome, a saying in the Soviet Union was: “They pretend to pay us and we pretend to work.” Dinner was as good as one could cook in a crowded communal kitchen and TV, when it was available, was mostly concerts and comedies in black and white.
