Stella Stevens: Hollywood’s Blonde Icon of the 1960s

Born 1938 as Estelle Eggleston in Yazoo City, Mississippi, American actress, director, and former model Stella Stevens was known for her work in film and television, particularly during the 1960s and 1970s. She rose to fame after being named Playboy’s Playmate of the Month in January 1960, which helped launch her Hollywood career.

Stevens starred in several notable films, including Girls! Girls! Girls (1962) with Elvis Presley, The Nutty Professor (1963) alongside Jerry Lewis, The Silencers (1966), part of the Matt Helm spy series, The Ballad of Cable Hogue (1970) directed by Sam Peckinpah, and The Poseidon Adventure (1972), a disaster film classic. She was often cast in roles that emphasized her beauty and comedic timing, but she also took on dramatic parts.

In addition to acting, Stevens directed several films and TV episodes, making her one of the early female directors in Hollywood. She passed away in 2023, at the age of 84, leaving behind a legacy of versatile performances and pioneering work in an industry often challenging for women.
