Born 1935 in Montijo, Spanish-born Mexican actress, singer, and poet Elvira Quintana moved to Mexico at age five. She rose to fame in the 1950s and 60s during Mexico’s Golden Age of Cinema, with standout roles in Bolero inmortal (1958) and Felipa Sánchez, la soldadera (1967).
Known for her beauty and talent, Quintana also recorded popular songs and wrote poetry, having written around 300 poems. A collection titled Poesías de Elvira Quintana was published posthumously in 1971.
Sadly, at the height of her career, her health declined due to pancreatitis and kidney issues, which required dialysis. These conditions were reportedly worsened by cosmetic treatments. She died of a stroke in 1968, at the age of 32 in Mexico City.
Her legacy lives on through her films, music, and poetry. A street in her hometown of Montijo, Spain, is named in her honor. Take a look at these vintage photos to see the beauty of Elvira Quintana in the 1950s and 1960s.
