The Last Known Photographs of Brian Jones, June 1969

On June 8, 1969 it was announced that Brian Jones had quit the Rolling Stones. In actuality he had been eased out of the group over a period of time due to personality conflicts with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. The final split must have given Bran a sense of relief in some ways, but there had to have been anguish at being jettisoned from the band he had originally created, as well as uncertainty as to what lay ahead.

What promise the future might have held for Brian Jones was never fulfilled. On the night of July 2-3,1969 he drowned under mysterious circumstances in the swimming pool of Cotchford Farm, his West Sussex home. Cotchford Fram had once been the home of A.A. Milne, author of the Winnie the Pooh books. The adventures of Pooh and Christopher Robin were all set in the grounds of the farm and in the surrounding countryside, and it was to this place that Brian carne to seek solace and refuge. Ironically, he found peace of a different kind: death.

These are the last known photographs of Brian Jones. The photos were taken by schoolgirl Helen Spittal in mid-June 1969 and show Brian on the grounds of Cotchlord. One shows him with a statue of Christopher Robin, a strange juxtaposition. A few weeks later, Brian was gone forever.
