Street Scenes of America in 1963

In 1963 German photographer Thomas Hoepker was on the staff of 'Kristall' magazine in Germany, taking a road trip across America from New York to Los Angeles and back, looking at Middle America in three months, when the editor asked him if he would be interested.

"It was 1963 when the editor asked me if I would be interested in taking a road trip across America with a writer friend of mine. I said, "Of course, but what do you want us to report on?" He simply answered, "show us the United States outside of the big cities and the well-known tourist spots. Show us what it's like to live there for ordinary people."
