Early Photographs of Animals in Human Situations From the 1910s

American photographer Harry Whittier Frees created novelty postcards and children’s books based on his photographs of animals. This collection from 1914 features animals dressed and posed as human with props. Frees may have actually been one of the pioneers of the ‘LOLcat’ phenomenon.

  3. Wonderful photographs of Hungarian soldiers and the civilian population. They show members of the Second Hungarian Army that had traveled from Hungary through the Ukraine all the way to Russia during the summer of 1942. After the army established its lines on the upper Don River, it had to face a major Soviet offensive on January 12, 1943. The Hungarians were out numbered and were especially outgunned, but most still fought with courage while they had to retreat eventually in horrible cold weather. Out of over 200,000 men, 96,000 died in battle, froze to death, became POW's, were wounded, or were lost in battle.

The on location photographs, some of them well-known, were taken by the Don river front in Russia duing 1942-1943, and not in the Ukraine, In fact, the Second Army had not even traveled through the Ukraine going eastward (went though farther north), but only on the disasterous journey homeward for about 100,000 soldiers.

Thank your for the great photos and for the commentary.
