19 Spirited Vintage Photos of Cheerleaders in Action From Between the 1930s and 1970s

The majority of early cheerleaders were men—in large part because squads did not begin opening their ranks to women until the 1920s. The gender balance shifted further during World War II, when an increasing number of women filled positions vacated by men who had been drafted to fight in the war. By the 1960s, the sport became dominated by women, as National Football League teams began to organize professional squads.

26 Amazing Vintage Photos of the First Nations People Before the 1900s

Alex Ross (1851–1894) came to Calgary, Alberta in 1884 and set up a photographic studio at the corner of Atlantic Avenue and Osler Street. He had previously worked for a photographer in Winnipeg, but felt the time was right to strike out on his own and establish his own business.

He quickly became well-known for his photographs of the First Nations people in the Calgary area, especially the Tsuu T'ina (called Sarcee at that time) and the Blackfoot. Some of the photographs were taken outdoors, but many more were carefully-posed studio shots. By 1891 the studio seems to have closed, and three years later Ross died at the relatively young age of 43.

“Some people don’t sleep at night, I am one of those people. These pictures were taken long after everyone had gone to bed, I would begin after midnight and go until 4 or 5 in the morning. I stopped at sunrise, like a vampire... I never really thought anyone would ever see these pictures, they went into shoeboxes, where they remained. I did everything, I was the stylist, the makeup artist, the furniture mover, the lighting director. It was my joy, I was the model...” – Nicks explained.
