Legendary actress Eva Marie Saint has died at the age of 102. Considered the last major surviving star of Hollywood’s Golden Age, she passed away from natural causes on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, at her home in Los Angeles, surrounded by her family.
Saint’s extraordinary career spanned more than seven decades across film, stage, and television. She made one of the most spectacular film debuts in cinema history, winning an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Edie Doyle opposite Marlon Brando in Elia Kazan’s On the Waterfront (1954). Famously, she accepted her Oscar while heavily pregnant and gave birth to her son just two days later.
She later cemented her cinematic legacy as the ultimate Alfred Hitchcock blonde, starring as the sophisticated secret agent Eve Kendall opposite Cary Grant in the classic thriller North by Northwest (1959). She went on to star in epic productions like Exodus (1960) opposite Paul Newman, The Sandpiper (1965), and Grand Prix (1966).
Saint originally honed her craft during the Golden Age of television. She was nominated for five Emmys throughout her career, winning a Primetime Emmy Award in 1990 for the miniseries People Like Us. She continued working well into her later years, playing Martha Kent (Superman’s adoptive mother) in Superman Returns (2005) and voicing Katara in Nickelodeon’s animated series The Legend of Korra.
She is one of the rare icons to possess two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, one for her contributions to motion pictures and one for television.
Eva Marie Saint was married to director Jeffrey Hayden for 65 years until his passing in 2016. She is survived by their two children and four grandchildren.
