Sharon Tate in Costume as Sarah Shagal on the Set of “The Fearless Vampire Killers” (1967)

Sharon Tate photographed on the set of the gothic horror-comedy film The Fearless Vampire Killers (1967). She played Sarah Shagal, a beautiful Transylvanian innkeeper’s daughter who is pursued and ultimately abducted by the aristocratic vampire Count von Krolock. While her character spends the vast majority of the movie as a mortal “maiden in distress,” she is bitten and transformed at the very end of the film. These photos capture her wearing the custom vampire prosthetics designed for those final, chilling moments.

The film was directed by Roman Polanski, who also co-starred alongside her as Alfred, the bumbling assistant who desperately tries to rescue her. Though Polanski initially had a different actress in mind for the role, producer Martin Ransohoff insisted on Tate.

While filming on location in the snowy Dolomite mountains of Italy, Tate and Polanski fell in love. Their relationship blossomed quickly during production, leading to their high-profile wedding in London in January 1968.
