Charles Montaigne: Dutch Master of Parisian Haute Couture

Charles Montaigne (1900–1989), born Martinus Meuwese in Tilburg, Netherlands, was a distinguished Parisian couturier and one of the few Dutch designers to achieve prominence in French haute couture.

After training as a tailor, Montaigne moved to Paris in the early 1920s and rose through the ranks at the legendary house of Madeleine Vionnet, eventually becoming head of the atelier. Following Vionnet’s retirement, he opened his own couture house in 1940 and was accepted into the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture.

Known for refined, elegant designs that appealed to a sophisticated clientele, Montaigne remained active through the 1950s and ’60s. He also influenced fashion education, founding a couture school in Amsterdam that later evolved into the Amsterdam Fashion Institute. These elegant designs showcase the refined craftsmanship and understated sophistication of Charles Montaigne, a notable figure in mid-century Parisian haute couture.
