16 Amazing Publicity Photos of Doris Keane for Silent Film “Romance” (1920)

Doris Keane (1881-1945) starred in the 1920 silent film Romance, directed by Chester Withey. This film was her only motion picture appearance.

She reprised her highly successful stage role as Margherita Cavallini, an Italian opera singer. The movie tells the story, presented as a flashback, of a priest who falls in love with Cavallini, exploring the conflict between his spiritual devotion and his worldly affections. Basil Sydney, Keane’s husband at the time, played her male lead in the film, portraying both Bishop Armstrong and his nephew.

The play Romance by Edward Sheldon had been a massive hit for Keane on stage, both in the United States and Europe, running for thousands of performances. The film adaptation was produced by D.W. Griffith’s newly formed United Artists. While it was based on a popular play and had a significant budget (with a considerable portion going to Keane's salary), the film reportedly went over budget and recorded a loss.

The story was later remade as Romance in 1930, an early talking vehicle for Greta Garbo. No copies of Romance are known to survive making it a lost film.
