Renew Yourself For the New Year With These Fabulous Hairstyles From a Florida Hair Salon in the '80s

These terrific snapshots of a hair salon in 1980s Florida were collected by Ed Engel. “I found the set in a Richmond, Virginia antique store a couple years ago. The location wasn’t clear from any of the photos, but one of the images shows the outside of the salon, located in a strip mall. ‘Hairstyles of the Rich & Famous’ appears to have been in Tampa, Florida. It’s no longer is in operation. Most of the photos don’t have dates on the verso, but the ones that do indicate they were shot around 1984-1986.”

“There are about 10 shots – all 5 x 7 b/w photos – that were probably shot by a professional for publication. A few of them have things like “reduce to 21 picas wide” written on the back. Most of the photos in this set appear to be amateur photos, though.” Engel shares. “I did poke around newspaper archives and have attached some ads clipped from the Tampa Tribune. Two of these are from January 1986, around the time ‘Hairstyles of the Rich & Famous’ appears to have opened.”

For a stunning new year, how about renewing yourself with one of these fabulous hairstyles from the eighties?

20 Amazing Photos of the Pierce Silver Arrow

The Pierce Silver Arrow was a luxury car produced by American luxury automaker Pierce-Arrow in 1933. Designed by Phillip O. Wright, it was introduced at the 1933 New York Auto Show. Five were built in a record three months.

The car caused an absolute sensation, with a modern flowing design, spare wheels hidden behind the front wheels, a wide-angle V-12, and top speed of 115 mph (185 km/h). Five production models were built, but they resembled a more typical Pierce-Arrow and lacked many of the unique features shown in New York.

Only three Silver Arrows exist today. Here is a set of amazing photos of the Pierce Silver Arrow.

40 Vintage Photos Defined Teenage Girls’ Styles in the 1950s

Christian Dior’s “New Look” of 1947 continued to influence the fashions of the 1950s. Unpadded, rounded shoulders, shapely bust lines, closely-defined waistlines, and fully, billowy skirts define the new, more feminine wardrobe. Blouses, jeans, and long, narrow skirts were also quite popular.

The dirndl dress, either sleeveless or with small puff sleeves and having a billowy skirt, became an extremely popular style. This type of casual attire was the hallmark of 1950s fashions.

Also notice the pony tails, which were very popular for girls in the 1950s. For a casual look, jeans were quite fashionable and were often rolled up at the bottom.

Check out these vintage photos to see what teenage girls looked like from the 1950s.

Football Has Lost Its King, Pelé!

Edson Arantes do Nascimento, better known as Pelé, was the undisputed king of the beautiful game and the only player to have won three World Cups, in 1958, 1962 and 1970. He passed away on December 29th in São Paulo, Brazil at 82 years old, losing a long battle against cancer that had spread to several organs in his body.

Pelé was born in Tres Coracoes, in the state of Minas Gerais, on October 23, 1940. He was named after the inventor of the light bulb, Thomas Edison, however when his birth was registered, the clerk removed the letter “i”, making his name Edson.

The nickname Pelé emerged when a young Edson couldn’t pronounce the name of goalkeeper Bilé, who played in his hometown. He would always say Pelé. At first, his teammates would make fun of the mispronunciation, without realizing how iconic that nickname would become in the future.

In 1956, he began playing for Santos, the team that launched him into stardom. In the 1958 World Cup in Sweden, he became the youngest-ever world champion at 17 years old, scoring in the final. Pelé was also part of the team that won the World Cup in 1962, and became a two-time club world champion with Santos. He scored 77 goals for Brazil, a record he shares with Neymar. In 1970, he became the first – and still only – player to win three World Cup titles, as part of a squad regarded as one of the greatest teams in the history of sports.

In the late 1970s, Pelé played in the USA for New York Cosmos, before retiring in 1977. He continued to be involved in sport, working as a pundit on television and serving as Minister for Sports in Brazil between 1995 and 1998.

Over the past few years, Pelé fought a long battle with a cancer that was first detected in the colon and spread to several organs, including his liver and lung.

New York in the Mid-1950s Through Fascinating Color Photos

The 1950s are an interesting time in New York City’s history. Having been established as one of the world's greatest cities following the end of World War II, New York was home to 7.89 million residents in the early parts of the decade. However, by the end of the ’50s, the effects of suburbanization, which saw residents and industries alike leaving for cheaper pastures, actually led to a significant decline in population that would hold until the early 1970s. With this decline in population came an increase in crime, growing wealth inequality, and an overall step back for the northern metropolis.

There were other, smaller, changes the city experienced as well—the shifting of neighborhoods, for example, as Chinatown began encroaching on Little Italy, or the proposed renovation of landmarks like Grand Central Station and Central Park. There were differences in the city’s economy, as certain industries began shrinking and more and more women joined the workforce. There was also plenty of growth—new museums, new buildings, new community groups.

These fascinating color photos were taken by didoulasaumure that show street scenes of New York in 1954.

Adorable Childhood Photos of Marianne Faithfull

Born Marianne Evelyn Gabriel Faithfull on December 29, 1946, in Hampstead, London, England, to an Austrian baroness and a British intelligence officer who had met in Vienna during World War II. Her father, a devotee of Utopian social schemes, relocated his family to a communal farm in Oxfordshire in 1950, but after two years the Faithfulls’ marriage disintegrated and Marianne and her mother moved to Reading, England. Living in rather reduced circumstances, Faithfull’s girlhood was marred by bouts with tuberculosis and her charity-boarder status at the local convent school.

Despite these early hardships, Faithfull emerged as a fashionable, vivacious teenager and soon began partaking in London’s exploding social scene. In early 1964 she attended a record-industry party with John Dunbar––an art student she later married––and there a chance meeting with Andrew Loog Oldham, the Rolling Stones’ manager, led to a contract with Decca Records. Her first single, “As Tears Go By”––a reworking of an old English lyrical poem––was written by Oldham, Jagger, and Stones guitarist Keith Richards; it reached number nine on the British charts and number 22 in America by the fall of that year. A colorful sparkplug of the swinging London scene, Faithfull was a few months short of her eighteenth birthday.

Faithfull became an overnight Top 40 sensation, known for her ethereal, whispery vocals and angelic face. Artistic differences led to a falling out with Oldham, but the teenager continued to record singles for Decca over the next few years, including covers of Bob Dylan’s “Blowin’ in the Wind” and the Beatles’ “Yesterday.” She had her biggest successes in 1965 with Jackie DeShannon’s “Come and Stay With Me” and “This Little Bird.” Her first full-length album, Marianne Faithfull, appeared in April of 1965, followed by Go Away From My World in November of the same year and Faithfull Forever in 1966. Below are some adorable childhood photos of Faithfull in the 1940s and 1950s:
