Diane Keaton, the Oscar-winning star of Annie Hall, The Godfather films and Father of the Bride, whose quirky, vibrant manner and depth made her one of the most singular actors of a generation, has died. She was 79.
Her death was first reported by People magazine. The legendary actress died in California on Saturday, Oct. 11. “There are no further details available at this time, and her family has asked for privacy in this moment of great sadness,” a spokesperson tells People.
Keaton’s major break came with Woody Allen’s films, especially Play It Again, Sam (1972), Sleeper (1973), and Love and Death (1975), where her offbeat humor and charm shone.
She became a cultural icon with Annie Hall (1977), which won her the Academy Award for Best Actress. Her portrayal of the eccentric, free-spirited Annie — a mix of vulnerability and wit — defined a new kind of modern woman on screen.
She also played Kay Adams, Michael Corleone’s wife, in The Godfather (1972) and The Godfather Part II (1974). These serious, dramatic roles contrasted with her comedic work, showing her range as an actress.
Off-screen, Keaton became famous for her unique fashion sense — androgynous, layered, and often featuring men’s suits, hats, and vests. Her Annie Hall wardrobe (inspired by her real-life clothes) started a fashion trend that defined 1970s cool. She stood out in a Hollywood dominated by glamour, bringing a mix of awkwardness, intelligence, and confidence that audiences found refreshing.
Keaton was celebrated with an AFI Life Achievement Award in 2017, telling the AP at the time that it was a surreal experience.
“I feel like it’s the wedding I never had, or the big gathering I never had, or the retirement party I never had, or all these things that I always avoided — the big bash,” she said. “It’s really a big event for me and I’m really, deeply grateful.”
In 2022, she “cemented” her legacy with a hand and footprint ceremony outside the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles, with her children looking on.
“I don’t think about my film legacy,” she said at the event. “I’m just lucky to have been here at all in any way, shape or form. I’m just fortunate. I don’t see myself anything other than that.”
