A World Apart is an American daytime drama that ran from March 30, 1970, to June 25, 1971, on ABC. The initial stories were written by Katherine Phillips (adopted daughter of Irna Phillips, who created Guiding Light, As the World Turns and Another World). The story concerned a soap opera writer who adopted two children, a fictionalized version of Irna Phillips’ life.
Susan Sarandon’s character, Patrice Kahlman, in the soap opera A World Apart, was at the center of a great deal of dramatic storyline, which was typical for a soap opera lead. Sarandon, reflecting on the role, famously described her time on the show by saying, “I was the girl everything happened to.”
The series ended with a moving final episode where Patrice Kahlman made peace with giving her newborn son up for adoption. The show itself focused on the struggles of the Kahlman family and a multi-generational cast, exploring the generation gap and racial tensions of the time, before being canceled after a little over a year. It is noteworthy for being one of Sarandon’s first major roles.
