On January 31, 1973, a large, fibreglass model of a dinosaur, a Cetiosaurus, was transported through Essex on its way from Ramsgate, Kent, to Aviemore, Scotland.
The 16-foot-high and 45-foot-long model was created by a Mr. Alan Ross, who was planning to open a prehistoric park in Scotland. The Cetiosaurus was temporarily held up on the Kent side of the Dartford Tunnel before being escorted through by a traffic control officer. It was then transported on a Ford Transit 175 Platform truck.
The dinosaur model made a brief stop on Canvey Island in Essex for two to three weeks while other models were made, before continuing its journey north. This event generated a good deal of public interest and was reported on at the time, with photographs showing the Cetiosaurus traveling on the road.
