Long before Shakespeare in Love and lifestyle empires, Gwyneth Paltrow made one of her earliest screen appearances in NBC’s 1992 miniseries Cruel Doubt. Based on Joe McGinniss’s true crime book, the two-part drama aired May 17 and 19, 1992, and starred Blythe Danner, Matt McGrath, and Ed Asner—with Paltrow cast as Angela Pritchard, the daughter of a family torn apart by a brutal murder.
Paltrow plays Angela as an intelligent but emotionally torn young woman who struggles with loyalty to her brother while coping with the trauma of the family tragedy. The casting of real mother and daughter gave their scenes a natural authenticity, especially in the grief and tension-filled family moments.
This was one of Paltrow’s earliest screen roles (she was about 19 years old at the time), and it came before her breakout performances in films like Flesh and Bone (1993) and Se7en (1995).
