Brigitte Bardot Celebrating Her 22nd Birthday With Co-stars on the Set of “The Bride Is Much Too Beautiful” in 1956

Brigitte Bardot turned 22 years old on September 28, 1956, right in the middle of one of the busiest and most exciting periods of her early career. At the time, she was filming the romantic comedy La mariée est trop belle (The Bride Is Much Too Beautiful), a sparkling Technicolor production directed by Pierre Gaspard-Huit and shot largely on location in Saint-Tropez and at Parisian studios. The movie—about a small-town girl who becomes an accidental fashion sensation—would later play a quiet but crucial role in shaping Bardot’s glamorous public image, paving the way for the international stardom she achieved just months later with And God Created Woman (1956).

On that late-September day, the crew of The Bride Is Much Too Beautiful paused filming to celebrate Bardot’s birthday. Production stills and press accounts describe a relaxed, cheerful atmosphere: Bardot, wearing a summery blouse and her trademark tousled blonde hair, was surprised with a large cake and bottles of champagne between takes. Co-stars Louis Jourdan and Micheline Presle, along with director Gaspard-Huit, joined in the toast. The young actress—already a favorite of photographers—laughed as the crew sang “Joyeux anniversaire,” reportedly blushing as she cut the cake with the same playful charm that was becoming her trademark.

The celebration came at a decisive moment in Bardot’s life and career. Though she had been working steadily in French cinema since her teenage years, 1956 was her true breakout year. The Bride Is Much Too Beautiful showcased her in a romantic, comedic setting, but it was Roger Vadim’s scandalous Et Dieu… créa la femme (And God Created Woman), released later that same year, that would ignite her status as an international sex symbol. Bardot’s birthday on set was thus a quiet pause before the storm of worldwide fame that was about to descend.
