Kyra Sedgwick is an American actress, director, and producer. She was born in New York City on August 19, 1965. She began her acting career at the age of 16, with her first role on the television soap opera Another World in 1982. On the show, she played Julia Shearer, a troubled teenager. Julia was the daughter of Brent and Barbara Shearer, and her storylines often revolved around family conflict and teen angst. Sedgwick stayed with Another World until 1983, before moving on to other TV and film roles.
After leaving soaps, she started getting roles in TV movies and miniseries. Notable appearances include Cindy Eller: A Modern Fairy Tale (1985) and Lemon Sky (1988, PBS), where she starred opposite a young Kevin Bacon (whom she married in 1988). In the late 1980s, Sedgwick began breaking into film. Her major movie debut came in Oliver Stone’s Born on the Fourth of July (1989), playing Donna, the love interest of Tom Cruise’s character Ron Kovic.
Kyra Sedgwick often played smart, somewhat rebellious young women. Her look was fresh-faced with curly hair and an approachable charm that made her stand out. By the end of the decade, she was already being recognized as one of the promising new talents of her generation.
