Charles Gesmar (1900–1928) was a French illustrator and poster artist best known for his vibrant and elegant Art Deco–style work during the 1920s. Though his career was tragically short, he left a lasting impact on the visual culture of French popular entertainment, particularly through his posters for the famous singer and performer Mistinguett, who was one of the biggest stars of the Parisian music halls.
Gesmar’s designs are celebrated for their bold colors, refined line work, and dramatic compositions. He combined the flair of theatricality with the sleek stylization of Art Deco, helping to define the visual identity of Parisian cabarets and revues in the interwar years. His posters often featured glamorous, idealized figures, exotic costumes, and a sense of luxurious movement, capturing the fantasy and energy of the time.
In addition to Mistinguett, Gesmar created posters for other performers, revues, and venues, contributing to the thriving nightlife and entertainment scene of 1920s Paris. Unfortunately, he died at the young age of 28 from pneumonia, cutting short what might have been an even more illustrious career.
