Amazing Photos of the 1910 Renault AX 8HP

French taxicabs rushing reinforcements to defend Paris during World War I helped make the Renault AX 8HP legendary. The model earned the famous "Taxi de la Marne" designation when hundreds of these small vehicles transported French troops to the front lines during the First Battle of the Marne in September 1914.

Renault manufactured the AX from 1908 to 1914, primarily targeting utility use and taxi service. Available body styles included phaeton, roadster, sedan, coupe, landaulet, tonneau, panel van, and pickup configurations. The design emphasized simplicity and durability over luxury, making it affordable for working-class buyers.

Power came from a water-cooled twin-cylinder engine displacing 1,060 cc (64.7 cubic inches) and producing 8 horsepower. A three-speed manual transmission sent power to the rear wheels. The lightweight 1,653-lb (750-kg) vehicle reached a maximum speed of about 25 mph, adequate for city driving and taxi work at the time.

The AX debuted at the 1908 London Motor Show and quickly gained popularity among cab drivers in major European cities. Its reputation for reliability and economical operation made it a practical choice for commercial use throughout its production run.
