Here are candid snapshots from Elon Musk’s college days with Jennifer Gwynne, taken between 1994 and 1995. The photos feature them at their University of Pennsylvania dorm, holiday celebrations in Canada, and casual campus moments.
Musk and Gwynne met while working as resident advisers at the University of Pennsylvania in fall 1994 and dated for about a year. During Christmas 1994, he took Gwynne to Canada—visiting his brother Kimbal at Queen’s University and spending time with his mother in Toronto.
In September 2022, Gwynne sold a collection of 18 photographs, a handwritten birthday card, and a 14‑karat gold necklace featuring a green emerald (from Musk’s family mine in South Africa) through RR Auction. The auction ended on September 15 and amassed more than $165,000.
Recalling Musk as “sweet,” “kind,” “smart” with a touch of playful mischief, she noted he was already dreaming of electric cars even in college. The relationship ended in 1995 when Musk moved to California; Gwynne said “talking on the phone seemed like a waste of time to him.”
They haven’t stayed in touch.
