35 Vintage Photos That Show What Flappers Looked Like in the 1920s

Flappers in the 1920s were known for their distinctive fashion, characterized by short bobbed haircuts, often with blunt bangs, and bold makeup, including dark lipstick and smoky eye makeup. They wore dropped-waist dresses or straight, loose-fitting shifts that fell just below the knee, which was quite scandalous for the time. They accessorized with long necklaces, headbands, and feathered headpieces, and often wore stockings rolled down to below the knee or completely ditched them, which was unconventional for the era.

Overall, flapper fashion was about breaking away from the restrictive clothing styles of the past and embracing a more liberated and modern look.

While primarily associated with the United States, this “modern girl” archetype was a worldwide phenomenon that had other names depending on the country, such as joven moderna in Argentina or garçonne in France or moga in Japan, although the American term “flapper” was the most widespread internationally.

Take a look at these vintage photos to see what flappers looked like in the 1920s.
