30 Vintage Photos Show What Bedrooms Looked Like in the 1960s

Moving through the decades, the trends of the 1960s brought a whimsical style to modern furniture. Bright, psychedelic patterns and bold bursts of color were mainstream.

Considered a golden age for furniture design, the taste in the 1960s home leaned towards smooth and sleek styles with tapered legs in warm wood like teak and walnut. Bedroom sets were very much a thing, and matching pieces would be bought together.

While funky shapes and colors dominated the decade, this ‘60s bedroom is an altogether more refined affair. The floral wallpaper and gilded picture frame had an air of stately grandeur.

Patterns became progressively more flamboyant in the 1960s with clashing prints, bold florals and intricate paisleys all fair game. Mixing and matching a variety of motifs, everyday bedroom showed how most people’s bedrooms looked at that time. Often small, they would use heirloom pieces – such as Art Deco dressing table – along with fashionable patterns and colors to make the best of what they could. And most women would have had a hairbrush set laid out.
