Madonna Photographed by Eric Kroll Backstage at Danceteria, 1983

Eric Kroll is a notable photographer, best known for his many fetish subjects. Equal parts Man Ray and Irving Klaw, Kroll has documented America’s seediest spots and denizens, sharing a certain aesthetic with fellow photographers Larry Clark and Richard Kern.

These early photos of Madonna capture the musician in her formative years, still a part of the downtown scene, roughly two years after her tumultuous affair with Basquiat. Taken at the legendary club Danceteria, Madonna the young pop star is shot candidly, seemingly moments from morphing into the pop diva legend of her time.
