These Rare Yearbook Photos of Robin Williams From His High School Days Show Beloved Actor Before He Was Famous

Before his rise to fame, Robin Williams was a shy boy interested in drama, athletics and debate at his Michigan high school. Here are some rare yearbook photos of Williams from his high school days, which perfectly capture the incredible man he was as a youth.

Born in Chicago in 1951, Williams called himself a shy boy who admired comedians like Jonathan Winters. Here, he poses for his 1966 yearbook photo as a freshman at Detroit Country Day School in Birmingham, Michigan.

While Williams went on to become one of the most esteemed names in Hollywood, he got his start in the spotlight participating in school athletics. Donning a No. 15 jersey, Williams is seen here posing for a team photo as an 8th grader on his school's basketball team.

From an early age, Williams had a knack for comedy, often making his mother crack up with his imitations of his grandmother.

A model student with an obvious talent for winning over crowds, Williams was also active on his school's debate team as a junior in 1968, pictured here.

By 1973, the young comedian had taken his act to the New York City streets performing as a mime on the sidewalks of Manhattan. In this candid shot taken a few years earlier, Williams dons his high school letter jacket as a senior at Redwood High School in Larkspur, Calif.

At the suggestion of his instructor John Houseman, Williams left his studies at Juilliard in order to try his hand at standup comedy. Here, he poses for his senior year portrait at Redwood High School in Larkspur, Calif. in 1969.
