1950s, celebrity & famous people, France, humor & hilarious, music, photography, portraits
Maurice Baquet is a multi-talented man: gifted cellist (1st prize at the Conservatoire de Paris), skier (member of the 1936 French Olympic Team), mountain climber (this talent used in several movies, including Premier de Cordée). He attracted poet Jacques Prevert's attention when riding on his bicycle, holding his cello, and soon joined Prevert's famed theater October group. Movies followed rapidly, and he became a favorite of the French public.
He has been active in several fields, outside of movies: a one-man show, music-hall, operettas (most of them with Luis Mariano; one of them was filmed - Andalousie (1951). He appeared on Broadway (My Aunt's Feather, with Liliane Montevecchi), and on the London stage.
A great friend of famed photographer Robert Doineau, he wrote "Ballade pour violoncelle et chambre noire" adorned with magnificent photos of himself by Doisneau.

In 1940, seven months before the United States entered World War II and nine months after Germany invade Poland, LIFE sent photographer Margaret Bourke-White to the young republic in order to document Syria's pivotal role—cultural, geographical, military—in the region.
Here's a collection of rare photographs which many of them did not run in LIFE before, featuring Damascus, Homs, Aleppo and other Syrian cities and towns as they appeared in the middle part of the last century.

Extraordinary Portraits of Women Taken by a Jewish Female Photographer From the 1920s and 1930s
Else Neuländer Simon, also known as Yva, was an extraordinary photographer in the early 20th century. Born in 1900 in Berlin, she worked her magic through fashion and advertising photography as well as owning a popular studio. She had a keen eye for the sensual interplay of light and shadow and used lines and curves to dramatically display the women she photographed.
Frequently, she said more about a subject by deliberately avoiding the model's face. Many photos focused on, or depicted solely, a woman's legs, and they were sexy and sophisticated works that endure through today. The importance of her art and her role are reflected in the fact that she taught Helmut Newton, who went on to become one of history's most famous photographers.
In 1942, Yva and her husband, Alfred Simon, were arrested and deported to the Majdanek concentration camp where they were killed most probably in 1942.

42 Stunning Restored and Colorized Historic Images Bring the Past To Life!
Relating to the past can be difficult when all you have to look at are faded black and white photos that feel like they are from another planet. The mind thinks and remembers in color, meaning a color photograph is much easier to connect with than a black and white photo.
Thanks to film colorization historic photos restored to full color bring new life to history. Film colorization is a process that can be conducted digitally or by hand. Prior to the 1970s basic colorization was possible but required carefully painting color onto film stock.
The invention of the computer has completely altered the way we restore historic photos thanks to digital colorization. While the process is still time-consuming it is very much worth the hard work.
Research is conducted to match colors as closely to how they really looked as possible, but in some cases artists must guess which colors to use.
