The Beauty of Misbehavior: 26 Vintage Mugshots of Bad Girls From Between the 1940s and 1960s

From murderers, thieves and hookers, these are the faces of the many who were captured on camera at the lowest points of their lives. And while many people would say mugshots of the past hold a certain curiosity, one man confesses what started as an initial fascination turned into an obsession.

Mark Michaelson has collected more than 10,000 photographs of men and women of all races and ages, taken after their run-ins with the law. The New York-based art director and graphic designer said he has always been drawn to ‘Wanted’ posters, but noted when he came across his first mugshot, “it was love at first sight,” according to Collectors Weekly.

Intimate Photographs Capture Ballet Dancers’ Rehearsals at New York’s School of American Ballet, 1936

In 1936 photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt did a photo shoot for LIFE magazine’s December issue of that year. It featured New York’s School of American Ballet, and except for the girls having different hair styles and a bit softer bodies than today's ballet dancers.

“The technical training across cultures and facility that dancers have now is so much greater,” Princeton Lecturer in Dance and longtime member of the Mark Morris Dance Group Tina Fehlandt told LIFE. “It’s important not to judge [Eisenstaedt’s] photos and the dancers in them by the technical standards of today. I love looking at old photos for that very reason — you can compare and contrast.”

These intimate pictures celebrate the many ways in which ballet, as an art form, has resisted change: a pliƩ is ever a pliƩ, and a dancer should still turn the legs out from the hips, rather than from the knees.

15 Rare Color Photographs of Brigitte Bardot During Strip Act in 'Mademoiselle Striptease' (Plucking the Daisy) in 1956

Originally titled Mademoiselle Striptease and directed by Marc Allegret, this classic French movie is a charming frolic through luscious Parisian cabarets with outstanding striptease performances. Agnes Laurent plays a spoiled young provincial girl.

Brigitte Bardot plays the role of a 'good girl' and a rather atypical shy and modest one. She gets into trouble by her own doing and enters an amateur striptease contest to win some much needed cash to bail herself out of her predicament. While other contestants take it all off during the competition, Bardot bares very little at all but still manages to win the contest.

Edie Sedgwick's Photos by Andy Warhol

Edith Sedgwick (1943–1971) was an American actress, socialite, fashion model and heiress. She is best known for being one of Andy Warhol's superstars. Sedgwick became known as "The Girl of the Year" in 1965 after starring in several of Warhol's short films in the 1960s.

Edie was introduced to Andy Warhol in 1965. Very much taken with the Boston native, Warhol announced that he was crowning Edie "the queen of The Factory," and commissioned screenplays for her. Wein became his new screenwriter and assistant director, beginning with "Beauty No. 2," which starred Edie and premiered at the Cinematheque on July 17, 1965. "Beauty No. 2" made Edie Sedgwick the leading lady of underground cinema.

Her on-screen persona was compared to Marilyn Monroe, and she became famous among the independent film glitterati. Her association with Warhol helped secure both his reputation and hers. With the glamorous Edie in tow, Warhol made the rounds of parties and gallery openings, and they generated reams of copy and free publicity. Originally an outsider, Warhol was eventually wooed by wealthy socialites and became a major part of the art establishment.
