25 Wonderfully Intimate and Candid Photos of Marilyn Monroe Taken by Eve Arnold

More than any other pinup girl or star of the silver screen, Marilyn Monroe has captivated the minds of an entire generation. With her come-hither stare and womanly figure, she continues to be one of Hollywood's sexiest women. While many photographers captured Monroe's obvious sexuality, Eve Arnold, the only woman to have photographed her extensively, captured some of the most tender images ever seen of the Hollywood starlet.

Following a 1952 photo shoot for Esquire magazine, Monroe and Arnold forged a wonderful friendship. Marilyn Monroe chronicles the six photography sessions that took place over the course of their 10-year bond, including a two-month-long session while Monroe was shooting The Misfits. Here, below is a Eve Arnold's wonderfully intimate and candid collection of images of Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe.

47 Fascinating Color Photographs That Capture Street Scenes of the USSR From the 1960s and 1970s

Life in the USSR at this time was not that much different from life in any other developed country in the world. The difference was in how people went about their daily activities and in what conditions they lived.

Communal apartments with shared kitchen and toilet were not conducive to a comfortable standard of living. Crowded public transportation (private cars were very rare) did not help either. Work depended whether you worked in a factory or in an office, but people did not seem to work too hard or cared too much about the outcome, a saying in the Soviet Union was: “They pretend to pay us and we pretend to work.” Dinner was as good as one could cook in a crowded communal kitchen and TV, when it was available, was mostly concerts and comedies in black and white.

These fascinating vintage color photographs below capture street scenes of the USSR from between the 1960s and '70s:

Rare Photographs of a Young Marilyn Monroe Goes Hiking in the Woods, August 1950

In 1950, LIFE photographer Ed Clark got a call from a friend at 20th Century Fox about a “hot tomato” the studio had just signed: Marilyn Monroe. The young actress had previously signed with Fox in August 1946, but was dropped after the end of her second six-month contract.

Monroe spent the following years honing her craft, taking acting classes, modeling, and befriending executives.

In 1950, she appeared in six films, including small parts in The Asphalt Jungle and All About Eve.
She was still mostly unknown when she joined Clark for a rustic photoshoot in the woods of Griffith Park in Los Angeles.
