Wide-Leg Jeans of the 1990s

Wide-leg jeans, colloquially called baggy pants, are a style of clothing that were popular from the early 1990s to the mid 2000s. The quintessential brand of “hip-hop”-style wide-leg jeans comes from the Los Angeles-based JNCO (“Judge None Choose One”), although other youth- and ethnic-oriented clothing companies manufacture them as well.

In the 1980s, baggy jeans entered mainstream fashion as the Hammer pants and parachute pants worn by rappers to facilitate breakdancing. In the 1990s these jeans became even baggier and were worn by skaters, hardcore punks, ravers and rappers to set themselves apart from the skintight acid wash drainpipe jeans worn by metalheads. They were largely an underground trend in the early 1990s, but took off in popularity in the mid-1990s.

The baggy jeans were very popular along with baggy bondage pants during the nu metal era which lasted from the late 1990s to the early-to-mid 2000s. They continued to be popular in the 2000s, but by 2003 baggy jeans started to be replaced by boot-cut jeans and trousers among white men. However, they continued to be popular among African-American and Latino men throughout the mid 2000s until about 2008.

Wide-leg jeans and pants are at least 20” in circumference at the hem. Wide-leg jeans differ from bell-bottoms in that the entire length of the leg is large in circumference whereas flare or bell-bottom jeans become wider below the knee. Super wide-leg jeans have a circumference at the hem of 23” to 26”; whereas extreme wide-leg jeans are as wide as 50”.

15-Year-Old Liv Tyler With Mom Bebe Buell Photographed by David McGough in 1993

Bebe Buell is an American singer and former fashion model. She was Playboy magazine’s November 1974 Playmate of the Month. From 1972 to 1979, Buell lived with rock musician Todd Rundgren. In 1976, Buell became pregnant from a brief relationship with Steven Tyler. She gave birth on July 1, 1977, naming the daughter Liv Rundgren and claiming that Todd Rundgren was the biological father. By then Rundgren and Buell had ended their romantic relationship, but Rundgren nevertheless signed the birth certificate and acted as a father figure to Liv, including paying for her education.

At age 10 or 11, Liv met Steven Tyler and suspected he was her father when she observed a resemblance between her and Tyler’s daughter Mia. When she asked her mother, the secret was revealed. The truth about Tyler’s paternity did not become public until 1991, when she changed her surname from Rundgren to Tyler, but kept Rundgren as a middle name. Buell’s stated reason for claiming that Rundgren was Liv’s father was that Steven Tyler was too heavily addicted to drugs at the time of Liv’s birth. Since learning the truth about her paternity, Liv and Steven have developed a close relationship. They also have worked together professionally, once when she appeared in Aerosmith’s music video for “Crazy” in 1993, and again when Aerosmith performed songs in the film Armageddon (1998), in which Liv Tyler starred.

Tyler maintains a close relationship with Rundgren. “I’m so grateful to him, I have so much love for him. You know, when he holds me it feels like Daddy. And he's very protective and strong.”

When asked about her youth, Tyler said: “For me, I didn’t get much of a childhood in my teen years because I’ve been working since I was 14. But that also kept me out of trouble. When everybody was doing acid and partying like crazy, I was at work on a movie in Tuscany ... having my own fun, of course, but it was a different kind of thing. I have no regrets. I love the way my life has gone.”

This UFO Spaceship McDonald’s Used to Exist in Alconbury, England in the 1990s

For many kids, getting a McDonald’s on a long drive would be the ultimate treat. And if you grew up in or around Cambridgeshire in the 1990s, you’ll probably remember getting a Happy Meal at the spaceship McDonald’s just off the A1 at Alconbury, near Huntingdon.

Originally built in 1990 as a Megatron, the restaurant was going to be the first of many in the chain. But the plans never happened, and instead the building became a McDonald’s in 1993.

The UFO Maccies sadly closed in 2000 due to soaring maintenance costs. It then remained empty for a number of years before it was demolished in 2008.

Photos of Liam Gallagher (Oasis) and Damon Albarn (Blur) Playing Soccer at a Charity Match in 1996

Pop legends Liam Gallagher and Damon Albarn go eyeball-to-eyeball as a crowd of adoring fans look on.

The Oasis frontman, dressed in a trademark bucket hat, is seen leaning into his southern rival with a stern look on his face. With his shaggy hair falling on his long sleeved shirt, the Wonderwall singer appears ready to go for Damon - either with a cutting remark or a rough challenge. But with an equally ludicrous hat on his head, Blur Damon stands up to Liam and refuses to back down. While it is a scene that could have come at any of the raucous awards shows the two warring bands, the image in fact was taken at a charity soccer match in 1996.

The two bands had been at each other’s throats for months as the feud played out in the press and then they came together on the soccer pitch at Mile End stadium in east London. And as it turns out, the two superstars had a surprise in stall for those watching from the stands as they came out hand in hand - before joker Liam pulled Damon's shorts down.

Liam famously said “Being a lad is what I’m about. I can tell you who isn’t a lad: anyone from Blur.” He recently added that he listens to Blur and that “I don’t mind Damon. He’s alright. I think he’s very talented. I mean he’s a boring f**ker and that. But then I would be an’all, hanging around with Noel.”

30 Amazing Photos of Tom Hanks From 1994’s Movie ‘Forrest Gump’

In 1994 a certain film was born starring Tom Hanks that has stuck with audiences for decades. With pinches of romance, historical themes, controversy, and action, Forrest Gump has something for every avid movie watcher.

When Tom Hanks signed up to star in the movie he opted out of receiving a salary, and instead wanted a portion of the film’s earnings. It turned out to be a fantastic move on his part, seeing as the film made more than $677 million. It is estimated by some reports that he earned over $60 million in the end. Hank’s performance in the film also won him an Academy Award, making him the second actor to win the Best Actor Award two years in a row. He won the award the year before for his role in Philadelphia.

One of the many things that Forrest Gump finds he’s amazing at during the course of the movie is ping pong. He starts playing it to pass the time as he recovers in a veterans’ hospital and then goes on to become a world-class ping pong player. As it turns out, Tom Hanks didn’t actually master the art of ping pong. He just vigorously swung the paddle around and the ping pong balls were digitally added in post-production. With the perfectly placed sound effects and seamless motion blur, you’d never be able to tell, even by today’s impressive CGI standards.

When a movie is being filmed, many takes are often required to capture certain shots. This can become a problem when the scene in question requires the actors to do a lot of running, because it quickly tires them out. In Forrest Gump, the title character runs across America at one point. Since Tom Hanks would’ve been exhausted by filming so many running scenes in quick succession, his younger brother Jim Hanks stood in for him. Jim Hanks isn’t identical to his brother, so he couldn’t fill in for him in the closeups, but he looked enough like him that the audience couldn’t tell the difference in the wide shots.

Forrest Gump was released in the United States on July 6, 1994 and received acclaim for Zemeckis’s direction, performances, visual effects, music, and screenplay. The film won six Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Tom Hanks, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Visual Effects, and Best Film Editing. It received many award nominations, including Golden Globes, British Academy Film Awards and Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Candid Photos Show Fashion Styles of Teenage Girls From the 1990s

Fashion in the 1990s was defined by a return to minimalist fashion, in contrast to the more elaborate and flashy trends of the 1980s.

In the early 1990s, several late 1980s fashions remained very stylish among both sexes. However, the popularity of grunge and alternative rock music helped bring the simple, unkempt grunge look to the mainstream by 1992.

The anti-conformist approach to fashion led to the popularization of the casual chic look that included T-shirts, jeans, hoodies, and sneakers, a trend which continued into the 2000s.

Additionally, fashion trends throughout the decade recycled styles from previous decades, notably the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s.

Here below is a set of candid photos that shows what teenage girls looked like in the 1990s.

Intimate Photos of 2Pac With Fans in the 1990s

Born 1971 as Lesane Parish Crooks in New York City, American rapper, songwriter, and actor Tupac Shakur, better known by his stage name 2Pac and by his alias Makaveli, is widely considered to be one of the most influential rappers of all time. Much of Shakur’s work has been noted for addressing contemporary social issues that plagued inner cities, and he has often been considered a symbol of activism against inequality.

Shakur released his debut album 2Pacalypse Now in 1991, and had become a central figure in West Coast hip hop, introducing social issues to the genre at a time when gangsta rap was dominant in the mainstream. He achieved further critical and commercial success with his follow-up albums Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z... (1993) and Me Against the World (1995). His double-disc album All Eyez on Me (1996) was certified Diamond by the RIAA.

On September 7, 1996, Shakur was shot four times by an unknown assailant in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas, Nevada; he died six days later and the gunman was never captured. Shakur’s friend-turned-rival, The Notorious B.I.G., was at first considered a suspect due to the pair’s public feud, but was also murdered in another drive-by shooting six months later in Los Angeles, California. Five more albums have been released since Shakur’s death, all of which have been certified platinum in the United States.

Shakur is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, having sold over 75 million records worldwide. In 2002, he was inducted into the Hip-Hop Hall of Fame. In 2017, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. Rolling Stone named Shakur in its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.

Here below is a set of intimate photos that Tupac Shakur pictured with his fans in the 1990s.

Incredible Photos of the Siege of Sarajevo by Tom Stoddart

The people of Sarajevo endured the longest siege Europe has witnessed since the end of the Second World War. For 47 months families were held hostage in their own city without food, medicine, electricity or running water, by Bosnian Serb gunmen who had been their neighbors until this civil war erupted in the spring of 1992.

By the time their suffering ended in February 1996, more than 10,600 Sarajevans had been killed. Another 56,000 people were wounded, many of them maimed or invalided for life. More than 1,600 children died and 15,000 were wounded.

Sarajevo had emerged from Marshall Tito’s Communist rule with optimism and hope, but its mainly Muslim population watched with trepidation as the former Yugoslavia tore itself apart with ethnic hatred and war. The turning point for Sarajevo came in March 1992 when Bosnia-Herzegovina declared its independence, and on April 6, thousands of peace protestors took to the streets of the capital to march to the Parliament building.

Shots rang out and the siege of Sarajevo had begun. All roads into the city were blockaded and the airport closed as the Bosnian Serbs sealed off the city from the outside world. From now on this would become a fight for survival.

Daring to go out in search of bread or water could cost your life. Everyone, even the very young, knew the only way they dare venture outdoors was to run for their lives between makeshift barricades trying to elude the snipers. All the city’s parks were stripped of trees for firewood then turned into cemeteries. The graveyards soon overflowed and ornamental gardens where courting couples once walked became burial grounds.

In July 1991, Tom Stoddart travelled to Sarajevo to document the civil war that was engulfing Yugoslavia. The work from Sarajevo was published across the world. Returning a year later for The Sunday Times Magazine, Tom was seriously injured in heavy fighting around the Bosnian Parliament buildings.
