Weightless Cats: The U.S. Air Force Once Tested Cats in Zero Gravity in 1947

After WWII, the Navy and Air Force began to compete for primacy in the U.S. space program by conducting their own research projects. Perhaps the USAF thought they were gaining an edge in 1947 when they used cats to test the effects of microgravity on movement.

It’s well known that cats will always land on their feet when dropped. According to this clip, those cat-like reflexes are completely lost in a weightless environment. The 1947 video was part of the US Air Force’s aerospace-medical-research lab’s bioastronautics research in Dayton, Ohio.
