These photographs were taken by Baron Wolman at Janis Joplin’s home in Haight-Ashbury, San Francisco in November 1967. She seemed to feel at ease at home. She’d just lay back and relax on her bed with her dog and her cat. Other photos of Joplin in front of one of the walls of her bedroom which was even papered with copies of the famous poster sporting a semi-nude Janis that Bob Seidemann had taken.
Baron Wolman was Rolling Stone’s first staff photographer and from 1967 through the early seventies his pictures appeared in nearly every issue. While working there he had virtually unlimited access to the stars of the day, photographing Janis Joplin, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and Jim Morrison among others.
Although his work at Rolling Stone has come to define his photographic career, Baron has been involved in numerous non-music projects. After leaving Rolling Stone in 1970, Wolman started his own fashion magazine, Rags, housed in Rolling Stone’s first San Francisco offices. Rags was a counterculture fashion magazine ahead of its time as “the Rolling Stone of fashion”), focusing on street fashion rather than the fashion found in store windows. Creative and irreverent, the magazine’s 13 issues (June 1970 through June 1971) were an artistic although not a financial success.
