Back When Bodybuilders Were Actually Admired by Women: Rare Footage of Arnold Schwarzenegger Wins Mr Universe , 1969

“What a super sight, as every woman in the hall agreed, as the supermen of Europe got together in Cologne for the international bodybuilding contest. And with what pride the mighty men displayed all the well known muscles, plus a lot that the average man had never heard of. Just imagine the embrace such muscle should accomplish, wasted on a girl, it could put pain to an ox, but who wants to embrace an ox?”
Who would have thought that this fresh-faced kid would go on to such great success in bodybuilding, movies and politics! In this clip we see Arnold in action in two Mr. Universe competitions, the first in Cologne in 1966, and the second in London three years later.

Although he was relatively unknown back then, he came away with the top prize at the '69 Mr. Universe competition.

Schwarzenegger's goal was to become the greatest bodybuilder in the world, which meant becoming Mr. Olympia. His first attempt was in 1969, when he lost to three-time champion Sergio Oliva. However, Schwarzenegger came back in 1970 and won the competition, making him the youngest ever Mr. Olympia at the age of 23, a record he still holds to this day.

He continued his winning streak in the 1971–74 competitions. In 1975, Schwarzenegger was once again in top form, and won the title for the sixth consecutive time, beating Franco Columbu. After the 1975 Mr. Olympia contest, Schwarzenegger announced his retirement from professional bodybuilding.
