Funny Photographs of The Beatles Playing Soccer During the Filming of “Magical Mystery Tour”, 1967

These rare photos show Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and George Harrison as they were filmed and photographed playing soccer in a backyard setting, while filming “Blue Jay Way” for Magical Mystery Tour in 1967.

You probably wondering why John Lennon isn’t in these photos? If you look really really close, Lennon is indeed there. He’s just dropping a sweet photobomb on The Beatles from the woods holding a white viola cello with a huge sunflower around his neck.

The soccer sequences for the song “Blue Jay Way” shot at Sunny Heights, Ringo Starr’s house in Weybridge. The Beatles were filmed in Starr’s back garden, with each band member pretending to play a white cello. When prior scenes for the song were filmed in West Malling in September 1967, a cello had not been recorded for the song, hence the need for additional footage now.

Created during the group’s psychedelic period, the track makes extensive use of studio techniques such as flanging, Leslie rotary effect, and reversed tape sounds. Explaining his inspiration for the song, George Harrison spoke about a trip he took to Los Angeles to meet a friend. “I told [Derek Taylor] on the phone that the house was in Blue Jay Way,” Harrison said. “There was a fog and it got later and later. To keep myself awake, just as a joke to fill in time, I wrote a song about waiting for him in Blue Jay Way. There was a little Hammond organ in the corner of this rented house … I messed around on this and the song came.”
