1960s Sci-fi Chic: 22 Rare and Funny Vintage Behind-the-Scenes Photos of Jane Fonda as ‘Barbarella’

The 1968 movie ‘Barbarella’ is known as not only one of Jane Fonda’s most memorable roles, but also the pinnacle of sexy sci-fi costuming. Fonda played the titular role of Barbarella–a futuristic astronaut in the year 40,000 who is tasked with stopping the evil Durand Durand. Directed by her husband at the time, Roger Vadim, Fonda can be seen with minimal clothing for much of the movie. Although it was a critical and commercial failure at the time of its release, ‘Barbarella’ has gone on to become a cult classic.

Jane Fonda’s costumes for the film were created by Jacques Fonteray and fashion designer Paco Rabanne. Inspired by armor and the 1960s women’s liberation movement, quite a few of the designs included unconventional materials. For example, a green leotard adorned with chain-linked rhodoid plastic fringing is one of the most memorable looks from the film. The barely there costumes also helped elevate Jane Fonda to sex symbol status. Take a look at some of these 1960s space age looks below.
