Zookeeper giving hippo bundle of hay, 1947

7/12/1947-New York, NY- Believed to be the oldest hippopotamus in the world, "Pete," a native New Yorker who was born in the Central Park Zoo in 1903, celebrates his 44th birthday at the Bronx Zoo. "Pete's" keeper, John Wendlang, didn't forget to mark the occasion. "Pete" had a "birthday cake" made of carrots and alfalfa. The carrots served as the candles. (© Bettmann/CORBIS)
